Modern day women’s panties have a short history compared to that of bras. They appeared in their modern version stockings held up by garterbeltat the end of the 18th century and they were known as drawers. Nevertheless, Roman women sometimes wore a garment called subligacullum and statues have been discovered dating to the Badari period in Egypt, around 4400 B.C. that appear to wear garments resembling women’s panties, similar to the ones worn today.

Panties are categorized into styles according to how much of the rear end is shown, how wide their sides are and/or at what height they are worn. The characterization of styles can be a combination of these factors and many times they can be loosely defined according to how particular brands may perceive them. In general, they can be named and defined according to the list below:

Briefs adjust to the waist, usually below the bellybutton and cover the rear end completely.

* Classic briefs usually extended below the hip and are known as “granny panties” by younger people.

* High-cut briefs come with narrower sides but still cover both front and rear ends to about the same extent.

* Control briefs can extend coverage up to the waist since they are usually made of spandex and offer support and a slim appearance.

Adhesive panties: These are strapless panties that stick on the user and cover a minimum amount of the body. They are used when the panty line is preferred hidden.

Hipsters adjust around the hips leaving the waist uncovered, allowing external clothes to follow suit, leaving the waist visible, if so desired.

Boy-shorts are inspired by male boxer briefs and are characterized by their short trouser legs.

Bikinis, also adjust to the hips but their sides are narrower and tend to cover less rear end than do briefs, with string bikinis consisting of the frontal and rear material joined by fabric in the form of a string, leaving the waist almost completely visible.

Tangas come with the waist band and rear fabric highly reduced.

* Thongs reveal more of the rear end, with a strip of fabric running between the butt cheeks that widens as it reaches the upper part.

* G-strings leave all body parts free to view, covering only the general area with a triangular fabric that is joined by fabric in string form.

Women’s panties are made of an assortment of fabrics, that include Lycra, polyester latex, nylon, rawhide, PVC, cotton, mesh, satin and silk to just mention the most common materials. Because of this, they cannot all be washed in the same way and some have to be treated with respect while others can just be thrown into the washing machine. They should however, be thoroughly rinsed as detergents can be the cause of infections.

Another thing to keep in mind is size. It is very important to pick your size correctly to avoid soggy, loose fitting underwear and tight-fitting panties that may be the cause of the famous camel toe due to the lack of support in the crotch area. Remember, not all materials behave in the same way when worn or washed which should be taken into account when shopping for your underwear.

Stockings are many times worn in combination with panties to cover the legs and are many times preferred over pantyhose because of the sensual effect that they cause, especially when held up by a garter belt. Nevertheless, stay-up stockings may also be worn with panties. These have a silicone band at the top that in contrast to garter belts, attached to the stockings by use of clips attached to their upper part, hug the thighs tightly, preventing them from falling. Another way of holding up stockings is the garter which basically clamps around the thigh. Garters are most commonly worn by brides on their weddings. The latter two types are referred to as “stay-ups” or “thigh highs” because of their auto-suspension ability not found in stockings.

Used panties on sale

While pantyhose, stockings, garter belts, panties, bras and other undergarments are considered as sensual ware, they are the object of underwear fetishism, referring to the sexual arousal felt by some people when touching, wearing them or seeing other people dressed in them which can be caused by printed and electronic images of this attire, as well.

An interesting side of this type of fetishism is that involving used panties. Although this fetish is well established in Japan, where one can actually buy used panties that can also be male, from “burusera” shops as they are known, outside of this country, the sale of used panties is found widely on the internet where their price tend to rise in accordance with the time worn by the seller.

Underwear fetishism is definitely present in part of the male population to such an extent, that with the growing tendency of buying through the internet and the fact that men now can privately browse for these types of garments without the knowledge of partners, friends and families, many lingerie manufacturers and retail sellers accommodate men’s growing need of these garments that actually spend quite some time and money on. This type of fetish is known as cross-dressing and involves a person wearing clothes associated with the opposite sex.

The fantasies aroused by underwear are part of human nature and although many times individuals who fantasize in such a way are marginalized or looked down upon, there is a whole industry catering to them, including within the sphere of art. Hentai for example, is to everyone outside of Japan, anime with explicit sexual imagery and story lines. Hentai, which in Japanese means “pervert” and is understood as perverse or extra-ordinary sexual desires or acts, outside of Japan is associated with anime and manga pornography. Anime in Japanese means animation but to the rest of the world signifies animation made in Japan and enjoys a growing number of fans around the globe.
